Non-Working Time

D

Don Conrad

Hi,

I'm setting up a schedule and have run into an issue that is a first for
me and was not able to figure it out.

Portions of my project will be working 5 day weeks, some portions
working 6 day weeks, and one that will actually be doing 7 day weeks.
Is there a way to specify by task what the non-working time will be? I
tried highlighting it and making the updates but it applied the settings
throughout the project. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

That's what Task Calendars are for!
Tools, Change Working Time, New: make 2 new base Calendars (SixDays and
AllDays, for instance)
Insert a column "Task Calendar"
Where necessary pick the deviating calendar.
That does what you need.

Hi Don,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

Fist set up your new calendars via Tools/Change working time... The select
the task and in Project/Task Information.../Advance tab, select your
appropriate calendar for that task.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

What determines if a task is on a 5 day, 6 day, or 7 day week? Is it the
work schedule of the resource doing the task or is it something inherent in
the nature of the work itself where the resources will be expected to change
their regular work schedule to meet those needs?

If it is the former, simply setting appropriate resource calendars will do
it - the normal behaviour is the the task schedule to follow the resource
schedule so if the resource works a 6 day week, the task's
working/non-working time pattern will change from the Project Calendar's
pattern to that of the resource's calendar as soon as you assign the
resource to it.

If it's the latter case, task calendars will do the deed as others have
suggested.

Thanks Jan, Mike and Steve. I'll be sure to try out your suggestions.
It sounds like exactly what I was looking for. This newsgroup is indeed
an excellent resource.
