Normal.dot corrupted after power outage...need to extract macros

Martin Grabeck

I have a normal.dot file that contains a TON of vital macros. After a
lightning storm I started receiving errors when using Word and none of my
macros could be accessed. I soon found out that my normal.dot file had been
corrupted. When I open Word 97, it says "Cannot open existing.." with weird
boxes and characters folowing the message. I had to let it create a new
normal.dot file, but I saved the old one because I really need these macros.
I tried using the Organizer to look inside the file but it doesn't see any
of the macros under "Macro Project Items." When i open the file up in
notepad, i see a ton of weird characters but I do see my data sparsed in
between, leading me to believe it is still recoverable. Can anyone help me
out here on what I could do to extract these macros or can a codemonkey take
a look to see if there is a way they can grab the code for the macros and
put it into a new normal.dot? Thank you.

Try renaming the old "Normal.dot" to "something.doc" and then open in Word.
Then you can see the macros by:

Tools, MAcros, Visual Basic editor etc etc.

Hope this helps.

When I rename the file and try opening it up in Word, it says that "The
document name or path is not valid." Any suggestions?

OK, double click on that renamed file with windows explorer. This should launch
the word automatically and open the file. Alternatively, launch the word first
then double click on the renamed file with windows explorer to load it in word.

If this fails and assuming there isn't anything confidential in the file, you
can email it to me so that I can try it for you. My email is: (e-mail address removed).

Hope this helps.

I sent you a correct email privately to your hotmail account ("Martin Grabeck"

give it online. However, send me here:

I shall look for your email on this spam ridden email box!

The best way to get rid of Normal.dot is simply to delete it. When you next
open Word, it will be replaced automatically.

As the poster said, he has many macros in his Normal.dot that he wants
to preserve.

I suppost it would be impolite to point out that this is
the reason that backup software exists.
