Normal.dot file save error

I am using Office 2002 and XP.
Word is my email editor in Outlook.
When I have Outlook open and have created an email Word prompts me to save
normal.dot as a different
name bucause "the file is in use by another application or user" when I
close Word.
If I close Outlook first this does not happen.
My templates are all located in a subdirectory of My Documents.

Any suggestions?

With Word closed, check for orphan files -

I already tried this and it still keeps happening.
I have even renamed the previous normal.dot and let word create a new one.
