'not installed for this user'

Hi everyone/anyone!

I have microsoft office 2003 student edition installed on my laptop. There
are two user accounts on the laptop. When I open any of the office programs,
it loads and appears to be right to use then I get a error message telling me
"Microsoft <.....> is not installed for this user. Please run setup." And
then the program closes. This happens for both users.
I have uninstalled Office several times and reinstalled, trying to install
through each user, and the problem still occurs. Has anyone experienced this
before and/or know how to fix it?

Thanks heaps for replying, the support page looked like it would fix it, but
when it asked me to right click the .dat file and click properties, the
properties window did not have any tabs except 'general'. So I couldn't go
any further! Both the users on the computer are 'computer administrators'.
Any further ideas?

I am having the same problem. I have three tabs none of them being for
security - so like Kylie I am stuck in using this fix for the problem. By
the way I am using Microsoft Office 2003 Professional. I can work around the
problem by inserting the program disk and running the install program as
requested, but this is time consuming.

It looks like to me that even the whole Microsoft staff can not resolve this
issue. I have been suffering from the same problem for 2 months. The
solutions given in the knoledge base articles are highly unlikely to help
anybody, so I am going to try my best to fix it by myself. If I succeed I
will put over my findings here.
Just wish me a good luck.

As the first item in the directions in the KB article (898512) states,

"Log on to the computer by using an Administrator user account."

If you do log on using an Administrator account, you *can* change file
permissions. If you don't log on using an Adminstrator account, you
can't fix this.

Did you remember what I said earlier in this thread? No, then go ahead and
read the post above. The reason why you can not view the security tab, is
that in the KB article 898512 Microsoft missed one small but very important
thing (I hope you've heard about necessary and sufficient conditions).
Somewhere between items 5 and 7 you just have to uncheck "Use simple file
sharing". Done. Hopefully, this one was helpful to someone.

Once again just to confirm that the solution given in the KB article 898512
does not work for me.
