Number Format in Tables - Help!!

D

Dirk Johnson

I can do some pretty advanced stuff in Word... but for the life of me, I
just can't figure out how to get Word 2002 to format numbers in tables
while my word processing staff (converting from WordPerfect) types:

Example:

they type 1234567.00
which automatically formats to: 1,234,567.00

Well, anyway, this is the result I want. I can get a format on a
calculated result, but not a cell being typed into, as it's so easy to
do in Excel or WordPerfect, for example.

I'm sure that this is something very simple and obvious, which for some
reason I just can't find anywhere -- and I've really looked high and low
for it.

Thanks,
Dirk

Hi Dirk,

Either insert and Excel spreadsheet and use that as the table so that you
can take advantage of the formatting capabilities of Excel, or use
formfields to hold the data. Then however the document must be protected
for forms which may impose unacceptable limitations.

Please post any further questions or followup to the newsgroups for the
benefit of others who may be interested. Unsolicited questions forwarded
directly to me will only be answered on a consulting basis.

Hope this helps

So you're saying that this is simply a limitation in Word. I see that
Microsoft wants me to use Excel for my tables... but then, why not give
the full formatting of tables in Excel that I have in Word?

I was able to do this stuff in WordPerfect nearly 20 years ago.
Honestly, this is really sloppy of Microsoft.

The question is regarding autoformat of numbers in tables. WordPerfect,
Excel, and just about every other program on earth, will allow one to
autoformat numbers in tables while typing the numbers into them (or at
least once the numbers are there): i.e., you type 12345 and you get
12,345.00.
