Office 10.1.4

I have just installed the update and had it working fine, until I came
to restart. Entourage needed a force quit so I could restart and now
it is up. I now cannot run a single application as the machine crashes
instantly. I can't even get a finder window up before it crashes.
Samba is working etc, so it seams that any interaction with the
desktop is too much for it. Is any one else experiencing this or is it
some freakish thing with my machine specifically?

Hi Gareth,

First thing to do is to run disk utility first aid to repair permissions.
Try that and post back with the results.

Thanks for replying Jim,

Okay this is what happened

Switched to single user mode

ran fsck and it tells me that in the stage checking multi linked
files, it finds a "Orphaned indirect node temp384661"

It repairs it and then I run fsck again and the file system is fine.

I logout

and it runs the multi user mode, the windowing environment starts, I
can run any app as long as it is not itunes or finder, before it
hangs.

I boot into single user mode and repeat the steps
and get a different Orphaned indirect node "temp384886"

if I reboot from here it crashes as before.

Any ideas???

That's a bad sign..... FileSystemChecK is useful but it is not a very
advanced software for repairing problems on a hard drive. I'd suggest
you'd run a commercial software like Norton Utilities or DiskWarrior (my
personal favorite for this type of issue). I suspect that you have
deeper problems that fsck does not detect and fix.

I have got my machine working, the only fix I found was to delete the
microsoft office app directory, I also deleted microsoft outlook 2001
just to be on the safe side and my machine came back up working
properly.

Thanks for the help,

Gareth
