Office 2003 Basic Edition isnt working

i recently updates Microsoft office from the website. by updating this, i
could not use Office as all tools menus icons were all locked

Was this a trial version? Did you activate it? (I know, these seem like
silly questions but I believe in getting the really obvious stuff out of the
way first.)
