Office 2003 Personal Folders file(.pst)

J

Jigyar

I have upgrade from Office XP to Office 2003.
Recently I wanted to reformat my HD because of a worm, and saved my Outlook
Office Data File so later I would be able to copy and override the default
file that Office creates. This has worked fine in prior versions of Office
2000 and Office XP.
However after the format, I decided to fresh install Office 2003.

When I overrode the Office data file which is located in <drive>:\Documents
and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
folder, the original(default) data file would not disappear from All Mail
Folders list when I launch Outlook. When I right click on Personal
Folders>Properties: Advanced Tab, the format shows Personal Folders file
(97-2002).
Here is my problem/questions:

1. How can I convert the old outlook data file from 97-2002 to 2003 version?
2. How can I restore my old outlook data file into the new installation of
outlook without having so many Personal Folders listed in Outlook's All Mail
Folders window?

Thank you for any help that you can give.

Hi Jigyar,

There is no automatic way of converting a Microsoft Outlook 97-2002
Personal Folders file (.pst) to a Unicode-capable Microsoft Outlook
Personal Folders file (.pst) file. The easiest way to convert a non-Unicode
.pst file is to create a new data file in the Microsoft Outlook Personal
Folders file (.pst) format that supports Unicode and then import items from
the old data file to the new Microsoft Outlook Personal Folders file (.pst).

Check out Outlook Help by typing in: "personal folders" (without the
quotes) and choosing the topic
Convert a non-Unicode data file (.pst) to a Unicode data file (.pst)

To clear up the All Mail FOlders List if you have existing Personal Folders
that you no longer need, try selecting it, right mouse clicking and
choosing "Close Personal Folders"

Hope this info helps.

1. NEVER overwrite a .pst file - you get the problems you are seeing now.
2. Open both .pst files in Outlook. Drag and drop from the 97-2002 one to
the newer format ONLY if you never intend to return to an earlier version or
share the .pst (copy back and forth) with an older version of Outlook.

Ian - NEVER import data into a .pst file from another .pst file unless you
want to lose:

1. Received dates
2. Custom forms
3. Connection between contacts and activities
4. Birthdays and anniversaries from the calendar, etc.

Open the .pst file and drag and drop your Outlook items into their
corresponding folders in the new unicode .pst file.
