Office 2003 Student and Teacher vs. Professional

I have Office 2003 Student and Teacher. Now I need a full professional
version of Word and I just found out I cannot upgrade it. Can I just buy the
full version of Word? If I just get Word, will the other features of Office
2003 S&T work?

I'm not sure what features are supposedly missing. I need Word to work with
Word Client and Dictaphone. According to this link, Word is the same in each
but it really doesn't get into the details of features that each has. I
haven't updated for a long time so just downloaded those and hopefully that's
the issue.

Does anyone know for sure if the Student edition is the full edition?

Also, will loading a different version of Word affect my other applications
(such as Excel) from my Student version?

Thanks!

Sorry, I'm not sure what you are referring to. I've seen it listed as
Microsoft 2003 Office Professional, not Pro. I guess the Standard version of
Word would work as well but is there a difference between that Word and the
student version?

Word 2003 is Word 2003, it doesn't matter what 2003 suite it came in.

As others have said, Word is the same in all the editions. There are
no "missing" features in the S&T edition.

Thank you to all! I downloaded some upgrades last night so hopefully that is
the issue.

As you've seen, Word is Word. Office can be purchased in a Pro
(Professional) edition. That would include programs that the Student &
Teacher doesn't. Where did you get the impression you needed a Pro version
of something?

Hi Brian,

Actually, in Office 2003, there are are basic versions of Word and Excel and enhanced versions of each. The main difference is that
the enhanced versions can support custom Schemas in XML and the basic editions cannot.

The enhanced versions of Word and Excel are in the standalone copies of the 2003 apps and in the Professional and Enterprise
editions. All of the other MS Office 2003 packages, including the Student-Teacher/Standard edition, contain the basic versions of
Word and Excel.

Well, there IS something different from the Student version versus the
Standard version because I removed the Student version and bought & installed
the Standard version and now it works with the Dictaphone program!

Hi M.T.,

Hmmmm. You didn't mention any details on how/what was not working previously, but I would suspect that there was some damage to the
previous installation, or that some of the optional features were not installed. The Standard, Student Teacher and Military
Appreciation packages are the same except for licensing.

It wasn't damage relating to installation or anything like that. It doesn't
work for anyone with the Dictaphone program! It could be related to the
licensing portion though as it was mentioned elsewhere that the only
difference is in the licensing.

Thank you to all who have replied to this post!!!

Hi M.T.,

Hmmm, the only difference between Standard and Student and Teachers in the licensing is how may installs can be activated. The
Professional Edition of Office has an enhanced version of MS Word and MS Excel that have more capabilities to handle customized XML
files.

Other factors that may come into play though are the level of updates applied to Office (security and service packs) and the same
with Windows itself. As an example, some versions of the Act! contact manager software add-ins and some versions of Adobe Acrobat
add-ins will work with certain MS updates installed and others will not.

What is it that happens (or doesn't, specifically
