Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel Folks,

I'll run this by the numbers

1) Purchased the Office 2008 Business Edition from Mactopia
  2) Downloaded .DMGs
  3) Installed the .DMGs
  4) Registered (I know, not necessary, but did it anyways)
  5) Updated via update manager
  6) Started Entourage, got the dreaded "Office did not install correctly" dialog
  7) Searched the forums, followed the removal instructions
  8) tried again steps 3-6, got the same results
  9) repeat step 7
10) tried again steps 2-6, got the same results
11) repeated step 7
12) Installed Home/Student from the Installation CD I purchased for my son's Macbook
13) Worked
14) repeated step 7
15) tried steps 3-6 again, no joy.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I have managed to resolve my issues; for the benefit of anyone else who might encounter the same issue here is what I did. Please note, I am an experienced mac/unix admin so what follows may cross your comfort zone boundary.

(1) Based on the information I found in the forums I used the terminal and the find command to locate all the files related to Microsoft Office on my system, under the $HOME, /Library and /private directories.
(2) removed them all
(3) restart
(4) Login, using "shift-key" to prevent anything extra from loading
(5) Turned off my Intego VirusBarrier X5 realtime scanning as well as my Intego NetBarrier fire wall
(6) Installed Microsoft Office 2008 Business Edition
(7) Everything worked fine.

Sorry for the fire-drill.

regards,

Dave

Easy way for most users:

In the Finder toolbar under Go, paste in this path:

/private/var/db/receipts

Remove the com.microsoft....plist files in this folder.

Diane, thanks for this -- however as noted when I followed these directions the first time, it did not work. I'm thinking on snow leopard, on my machine, for some strange reason (bad karma likely) there was something else somewhere which needed to be pummeled. I don't know if it was the for(find); do rm or the netbarrier/virusbarrier shutdowns which fixed my problem.

again, my thanks for your response and for the service you provide to the community.

regards,

Dave
