Office 97 and Win2k Problem

A

Andy

Hi all :)

Ok, this is the situation, i installed Office 97 on a windows 2000 fresh
install, and when i try to open any file from the office package (excel,
word, etc) it says that "the file is already open and i have to open it in
read only mode", this happens with new files also, if i try to open a file
from "File, Open" this won't happen, that's why i think it's a problem with
explorer and the way it handles file opens, but the file association is ok.

What can i do? is this a know problem, is there a patch ?

I really need help with this, thanks !!

The file associations may appear to be okay but that's where the
problem lies. Typically when this occurs the file name is represented
twice in both the command and DDE si Windows 2000 is attempting to
open the files twice.

To correct the issue, go to Start/Run and use the following commands
to recreate the file associations:

winword /r
excel /regserver
powerpnt /regserver
msaccess /regserver

Note the space before the forward slash.

Since you are using Office 97 you can use: Setup /y /r to correct the
problem as well. The /y /r switch just rebuilds Registry information
and does not reinstall Office.

Go to Start/Run, browse to Setup.exe on your installation CD and add
the switches at the end. It would look something like

D:\Setup /y /r

Note the space before each forward slash.

You have an anti-virus program set to scan files you open perhaps? That
would explain the issue. If this is the case, turn that feature off. It
may also be known as Norton Anti-virus Office plugin.
