Office '97 File Access

Confused

Every Office '97 document the user tries to open, they get the following error:

"File already open by another user. Click OK to open a copy"

This is a Windows XP Pro machine and is standalone. The documents were
copied from an XP Home machine to this machine. What might be going on and
how can I change it?
