Office 97 installation on Windows XP

H

Hotmail Mike

I am trying to install Office 97 on Windows XP. I get
a "Microsoft Office 97 setup was not completed
successfully" message. I look at the installlog.txt
file, the first error message that appears is
"GetWindowsPathFromReg CAH error: couldn't get path to "Common Programs"
from registry."

Will someone please interpret this for me and
give me a solution so that I can install Office 97?

Thank you.

You probably can't install Office 97 on Windows XP satisfactorily if
Windows XP has Service Pack 2 installed. There has been much
discussion of this on this newsgroup, search on older messages and you
should find more information.

You might find it easier to search on Google Groups, just go to
http://groups.google.com and type microsoft.public.office.setup (the
name of this group) into the search box and click "Search". Then just
entering Office 97 in the "Search This Group" box and clicking the
button will bring up hundreds of hits, click on the "Search by date"
button and you should have all the recent posts to help you.

Kevin Brunt (Fat B@stard)!!

Windows XP SP2 has blocked installation of Office 97 as Microsoft wants everybody to buy the latest version of Office (revenues from new products are down at the moment). Uninstalling SP2 may not be possible in most new PCs as you simply can't uninstall SP2 if the OS was factory installed or you used a slip-streamed version of XP.

Have you tried going to your nearest store to see if they have a special deal on Office suites? Alternatively, try to download a pirated copy from the web. Just do a search or try Kazaa.

Kev.
