Office Application is hanging when trying to select a new director

After opening an office application (for example word) and selecting "File"
"open" and trying to change the directory, the application is "hanging" for a
while. After a few seconds, depending how many tasks are running, the
directory can be selected. This isn't happening with "Open Office"
applications.
Any helpfull hints?

Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop,
left-click on Disconnect Network Drive, and disconnect any mapped
drives that are not currently available.
