Office applications crash on launch

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Intel

I recently tried installing Microsoft Office 2008; however, every time I try to open an Office application, it immediately quits. It doesn't seem to matter whether or not I download the upgrade -- either way, it doesn't work. So far, I've tried removing and re-installing Office twice. Any ideas?

This is the error message I get when I try to open an application:

Have you tried updating to the latest patch? I believe the latest patch is SP2 (12.2.0)

I did download the patch, but it didn't make an difference.

I finally figured out that a corrupted font was causing the problem. I couldn't figure out how to fix it myself, but the local Mac store took care of it in a jiffy. Now everything is working just fine.
