My husband just purchased this new system and it has Basic. I am so upset
that this is not offering me what I want and need..my question is-Even though
this is just Basic is the option to upgrade to a full version of Office
something I can do? It tells me to go for a test drive and I can't figure out
how to do that. I loaded the service pack 2.

From what Microsoft's own website shows, it looks like you have full
versions of Word and Excel as well as Outlook but without Business Contact
Manager. Compared to the standard edition, all you're missing is PowerPoint.
What do you believe you're missing?

You also need to know that you can't "upgrade" to another edition of Office
2003. What you'd need is a "cross-grade" and there is no such thing in
Office.

What did you need that you didn't tell your husband you needed?

Hi Desper8,

MS Office 2003 Basic Edition is an 'oem only' (i.e. no retail copy) version sold with new PCs. You may want to contact your PC
supplier. A number of them have their own 'upgrade' or 'swapout' policy on new systems that would let you either (a) upgrade to an
OEM edition of Office 2003 Professional Edition (to be licensed only to your specific machine) or (b) to allow you to return the
Office Basic edition (less likely though) and then you could purchase a retail edition, which has more flexible licensing.

The other possibility is that you have an Office 2003 60 day trial edition installed (check the title in Add/Remove Programs in the
Windows control panel). In that case you would need to purchase a retail copy or a license in either case.
