Office crashes in Snow Leopard.

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
Processor: Intel

The interesting thing is, that I have two computers but I have problems with Word crashing only on one.

I search everywhere and so far I:
Deleted the office.plist as well as all the components plist
Replace Normal.dotm
Check fonts
Reinstalled SL
Reinstalled Office

None of these had any effect.
It still crashing.
Any ideas or solutions?
Thank you.
The Office is fully updated.

Although the info you've supplied is potentially useful & good to know,
you've not described anything about the crashing itself...

Any programs other than Word? On launch, while in use, on Save, on Quit...?

Also:

Was this an upgrade to SL or a clean installation?

What do you mean by "check fonts"? Did you Resolve Duplicates?

When you reinstalled SL did you also apply the 10.6.1 update?

Have you repaired disk permissions since any installations or updating?

Have you shut down (not restarted), then powered up after 1-2 minutes?

Any other details would also be helpful.

Bob, I will try to answer to all your questions:

So far Word and Excel did crash. Generally, I open a saved file (random) and when I try to edit it, the program exits and the error message appears. This also happens when I try to insert a picture.

This was an upgrade to SL not a clean install.

I did the Validation of fonts and resolve duplicates (there were none)

Reinstall SL and did apply 10.6.1.

Repaired permissions.

Powered down computer. Maybe I powered back on too fast (45 sec.)

The crashes do not seem to occur if instead opening the program and then the file, I open directly from the file itself.

Thank you for your help.

I did the Validation of fonts and resolve duplicates (there were none)

Snow Leopard installed newer version of some fonts so you should have had to
disable or remove the older ones in the Microsoft fonts folder.
The crashes do not seem to occur if instead opening the program and then the
file, I open directly from the file itself.

I'm seeing a similar problem in another application. This could be a bug in
Snow Leopard. The next update for Snow Leopard might resolve this.

Diane you were right, there are some duplicates. After a check with Font Book, I run "Resolve Duplicates" and disable all the duplicates.

It still crashes.

Diane you were right, there are some duplicates. After a check with Font Book,
I run "Resolve Duplicates" and disable all the duplicates.

Could be font caches too. Snow Leopard cache cleaner might help.

Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or
if it¹s your User¹s folder that contains the problem.

I experienced this same problem when I upgraded to Snow Leopard. When I would save something in Word, Excel or PowerPoint, it would unexpectedly quit. I removed the right plist files and nothing worked. It got so out of hand that I downgraded back to Leopard. I was also having some other problems that led me to downgrade too.

I might do just that. despite the hype about SL, I see very little benefits.

A suggestion....

Create a partition that's 20 GB. You can do this using Disk Utility if you
have enough room on your drive. Remember to leave 10% free for your main
partition.

Install Snow Leopard and Office 2008. This will take 8.05 GB. You can play
around in this test partition until you are satisfied that Snow Leopard is
stable for you.

Don't forget to remove the duplicate fonts after installing.

I want to try first creating another user but I am on business trip so... next week.
I know a lot of people experience this problem and I am hopping that someone will come up with a sure solution.
Again the intriguing part is that only one of my too computers has this problem. The other one worked from day one without any tweaking.

You just made the case why there isn't one simple solution. Even you are
experiencing different results. Every computer is different. Caches and
preferences are most likely at fault.

While it's easy to do the easy upgrade to Snow Leopard over Leopard, for
major upgrades, it's best to take the time and clean install everything.
This way to don't bring over old baggage that can muck up things. A new
operating system doesn't come along every day and it's like moving....you do
some housekeeping that you have put off forever and get rid of that stuff
piling up in the garage.

I have a similar problem but it has nothing to do with the Snow Leopard upgrade. Various office programs hang and then quit at launch. It began with Excel but now affect's word as well. The programs appear to open properly, but as soon as I click on the window containing the document/spreadsheet itself I receive an error. This is the info it sends to Microsoft:

I'm using an early 2008 Macbook running Snow Leopard 10.6.1

I also have the latest updates for Office.

I would like to post an update. I did a clean install of SL, reinstalled Office did all the updates and guess what? Is still crashing. Not as often as before but enough to make it disrupting.
Either Apple or Microsoft needs to figure this out.

Did you delete font caches and delete the Microsoft fonts that are older
than the new ones installed by Snow Leopard?
