Is there any way to get the office shortcut toolbar in
Office 2003? I can't believe MS took this out. using
the start bar is not nearly as convenient

You're correct that MS discontinued the Office Shortcut
Bar (OSB) after Office XP.

Here are some options you may want
to consider.

1. 3rd party products.

There are what appear to be free 3rd party toolbars
that some folks say they like using.\

This one is is similar to use to the OSB

one that has a number of configuration options

and one that is a bit more techie oriented but with
added features would be this one.

2. Using Windows Toolbar Customization Features

a. You can use the Quicklaunch toolbar in
Windows and drag copies of your Office shortcuts
to it, or

b. Create a new Toolbar by right clicking
on a blank spot on the Windows Taskbar, unlocking it
and creating a new toolbar(folder) and drag the Office
or other shortcut icons to it. You can tear off that
toolbar and place it and size it as needed anywhere on
your desktop.

3. Use an Older version of the Office Shortcut Bar

If you have an older version of Office with the shortcut
bar and running MSOffice.exe from Start=>Run doesn't
start it, you can do a custom install of the old version
of Office and choose just the Shortcut bar. (Note that this
may put a great deal of the core old Office files back on
the PC if you've removed the older version). The OSB
should work, but will be 'as is' and doesn't support
things like high resolution icons.

I assume you are using XP.

Do this:

Right click on the Taskbar. Choose Toolbars > New
Toolbar. When it asks for a folder, click "Make New
Folder". Use the name like ie. "Office toolbar". This
will create a new toolbar on attached to the Taskbar.
Now you can drag and drop icons into it and they will
appear on the Taskbar. To add shortcuts to Office
programs (Word, Excel, etc) click Start, "All
Programs", "Microsoft Office", then drag-n-drop the icons
for the programs you want from there over to the
new "office toolbar" you created (use right-click drag if
left-click doesn't work, then say "Copy here".)

Viola! You might also want to right click on a blank
area of your new toolbar and turn off the "Show text"
and "Show title" options so that it just shows the small
icon. Then you can just single-click those icons to
launch Word, etc...
