Office XP Process Locking

We have several systems with a standard build of win xp pro, office xp pro
each machine is experiencing a problem when attempting to start ms word or ms
excel, basically when attempting to open either application the user receives
an "out of memory" error, we have determined that the cause of the error is
that a previous instance of the application has locked in process (i.e
winword.exe is still in process list although application has closed), we
have tried reinstalling both OS and Office also updates and spent several
hours trying to google for a solution but to no avail, we would appreciate a
solution to this problem asap as it is inhibiting our users from working
efficiently.

Have you tried Detect and Repair? What Service Pack level is Office at?

Is there any other software installed which *might* be using part of Office?
