i tried installing XP2, and it asked for the original CD,
which i inserted. it still couldn't find the file
PROPLUS.MSI and the installation failed. i've tried re-
running the install to get the exact message, but now it
just fails without the message.

I am having the same exact problem. There was no error
number; just that it could not find the file PROPLUS.MSI
on the CD. I did a search for it on the CD and my hard
drive and did not find it. Can anyone help us?

I have the same problem, here is a good guess...
The xxx.MSI is the install package you find in the root
of your CD.
PROPLUS.MSI is the installation package for the Office XP
version that comes with Frontpage.
My CD has PRORET.MSI (note the difference) in the root,
and doesn't include Frontpage, however, I have separately
installed Frontpage 2002 and Outlook 2002.
I suspect that SP2 looks at what is installed on your
machine and make a wrong guess at what media you
installed from. This isn't a solution, but only a guess
at the problem.
If I don't find a real solution, I guess I will uninstall
everything, then just install the one package, and then
see if SP2 doesn't ask for PRORET.MSI. I suspect it will.
