Old Questions

Do the MVPs look at posts that are 1 or 2 days old, if there are additional
questions posted there?

If they do, how do they handle the ongoing posts at the same time?

David,
We MVPs are simply amazing. We see and hear all. Why, some of the guys
can even respond to multiple posts simultaneously.

On a more serious note, we try to answer 100% of posts and I think if
you look at our newsgroups compared to many others, our response rate is
among the best. Generally a post will be answered the same day
particularly if it is pretty straightforward. A few posts may require
special expertise and the MVP that takes it may not check the newsgroup
for a while (i.e. a day or two). Since we are all volunteers and most of
us have full time jobs, we may not have the time to answer posts until
off-hours or on a weekend.

With regard to ongoing discussions I can't speak for the other guys but
here is how I handle them. I use a newsreader to participate in the
newsgroups. I generally look for posts that no one else has answered and
if the subject is of interest I will check the thread to see if I have
anything useful to add. Once I respond to a post, the post is flagged.
Then the next time I log-on I check new posts and those that I responded
to previously to see if the problem was resolved or if I need to explain
something further. The best scenario is that the original poster will
respond back saying that the answer solved the problem. Positive (or
negative) feedback is always appreciated and welcome.

Usually I look at a post in which I have posted to see if there is a
follow-up question. It is not hard. Most newsreading software lets you flag
threads you have posted in or are interested in. I think that most of the
project MVP's use a newsreader like Outlook express, agent or other NNTP
software in the newsgroups. I'm not aware of anyone who uses the web
interface. It is fairly slow and inefficient.

Occasionally there are posts which no one answers. This is typically because
no one knows the answer.

Hi Doniy,

You can't use Outlook for newsgroups, you need a newsgroup reader. I use
Outlook Express which is provided free with Windows. If you wish to use
that, I'll give you the steps necessary for setting up an account.

OK, Doniy, open Outlook Express. Go to Tools/Accounts.../News
tab/Add/News/enter display name...... follow the wizard entering the server
name: msnews.microsoft.com. When finished, this should put the name of the
server in the Folders list on the left. Click on that and in the dialog,
click on newsgroups and type in project and beneath it should show all the
project newsgroups. Double-click the ones you want and select Synchronize
Account. Good Luck:)
