Open project plan changes to read only

If I open a project plan and keep it open without making changes for a period
of time then later attempt to update it the project changes to read only
status which prevents my updates unless I save the plan under a different
name. I then have to close it down and re-open to apply the updates. I am
using professional 2003 version. Whilst it is not insurmountable it is
slightly irritating! Is anyone else also experiencing this problem? How do I
stop it!

Tomd,
It sounds like you are in a Project Server environment. Try posting on
our sister newsgroup: microsoft.public.project.server.

Tomd,
There are three possibilities that I can think of. One is that the
project is designated as "read only recommended" but in that case you
should see a message when you open the file. At any rate you can check
for the read only option under File/Save As/Tools/General Options.

A second possibility is that someone else has the file open or opens the
file and has higher read/write priority. Of course this won't be the
case if you are the only one using the file.

One other possibility is that the file has corruption. If the other two
possibilities are not applicable, go to our MVP website at:
http://www.mvps.org/project/faqs.htm
and take a look at FAQ 43 - File Bloat? Might be corruption. Follow the
steps and see it that helps.
