Opening Office 2003 files in a separate window

J

JKJOUNG

I recently upgraded from Office 2000 to Office 2003 Pro. In Office 2000, my
files would open in separate windows (even if they were the same type of
file). In Office 2003, that doesn't seem to be the case. Anybody have any
idea how to change the setting? I've looked around and can't seem to figure
out how to do this. Thanks!

So I found that and the "Windows in Taskbar" is already checked. I do get
the individual windows in the taskbar, they just don't open as separate
windows on the screen above. Seems like this may be a bug? I don't know.

Any insights that can be provided would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Okay, I found that but it was already checked. I get the separate bars for

screen above the Taskbar. Any insights into this would be appreciated.
Thanks!

What do you mean "Screen above the taskbar?" Do you want Window->Arrange

Sorry. I mean that although each file has it's own "bar" in the Taskbar,
each file does not open into it's own window.

Yes they do...hit Alt + Tab and you'll see that you can cycle through
each, individual open window. It may just appear that they are in the
same one?????

Hi,

Thanks to all for their replies. I'm not explaining the issue clearly enough.

In Office 2000, I used to be able to have each document open as its own
window so that I could, for example, resize each window to take up only half
of my screen and then view both files side-by-side. I can sort of do this
right now but the two files are both displayed within a larger MS Word (or PP
or Excel, depending upon the file) window. The advantage of having each file
within it's own MS Word window was that I could see more of the text from
each file. I hope I'm explaining this clearly. Maybe this functionality is
just not available in Office 2003 (which would be unfortunate). Thanks again.

Okay, what you mean is the SDI, single document interface that was
incorporated in Word 2000. In Word 2000 you were not able to open two
docs within the same instance as you did in previous versions of
Word... without using a macro, as I recall. If you were doing that,
you probably had the macro. I do remember an option, but think it came
out later as an addin tool...but I can't remember all the details.
(Although I'm sure Suzanne Barnhill does!<g>)

I haven't tried converting 2003 using the macro that you could use for
2000, but I assume it would work. You should read this Word MVP
article:

http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/MacrosVBA/ActivateNewDocument.htm

Good luck...

Hi, JKJOUNG and all;

In my tests I found the behavior of Word 2003 to be different than you
described. If I check "Windows in Taskbar", I can tile two complete Word
windows side by side. If I uncheck that option, I get two sub-windows within
the larger Word wndow. So far, so good.

Trying that with Excel 2003 is where it got weird. Checking "Windows in
Taskbar" in Excel resulted in two Taskbar buttons, but only one Excel window.
Tiling side by side had to be done from the Window menu within Excel, rather
than from the Taskbar as I had done with Word. The result was what you
described, two sub-windows within the larger Excel window.

Further differences, (Windows in Taskbar checked):
With two Excel windows open, Task Manager> Applications shows both workbooks
plus Excel, for a total of three entries.
With two Word windows, Task Manager> Applications shows one entry for each,
a total of two.

With Windows in Taskbar unchecked, each app gets only one entry in Task
Manager> Applications, even with two sub-windows in each.

Are you saying Word 2003 behaves for you exactly the same as Excel 2003 does?

Any body else get different results?

Regards,
Ian.

Dian Chapman, MVP, MOS

No...the apps behave differently. Excel kinda does it's own thing with
new spreadsheets versus new docs.

There ARE a lot of ways to do it...so it kinda depends on what works
best for you. You can open two instances, you can open two file in one
instance, you can use the Windows > Tile or new in 2003, the Windows
SideXSide comparison. Or you can use the Taskbar Tile.

Or you can toss them in Preview and compare sideXside...or sync/not
sync the scroll between the views.

Or you can even open one document with two views by using the split
screen view.

OR...you can even compare docs by using the Compare feature to compare
the marked difference in one doc vs another.

So there ARE a lot of different ways to do this. Many folks have just
given you their many preferences...hence the confusion.

Hope this helps...

Hi, Dian;
Many thanks. I was getting confused yesterday with the behavior of Excel,
and unhappy, too. I used to set up small spreadsheets to track various things
I was doing, with each window differently sized and shaped, and each taking
up very little screen space, and I didn't remember it being a problem.
Opening another instance of Excel solved it, and I am once again a happy
Excel user.
Best regards,
Ian.

No problem...thanks for the thanks and glad it helped.

(Just treat them all like individual teen...all with different
problems...and you'll stay sane, more or less!<wink>)
