Opening Word 2003 in Word 2000

I use Word (9.0) 2000 and have started having trouble with files sent to me
containing figures and tables. Sometimes I can't even save the file to my
computer. When I can save it I can't modify or save with changes. The only
thing I have noticed is that all the files I have trouble with are Word 10.0
and 10.1. Do I need to upgrade?
