Optimize resource assignment

M

Marcello

Hi,

I've got a question regarding the attached project file (MS Projec
2007). I've added a task and created two resources, one with a max
assignment of 100 % (8 hours per day) and one with a max. assignment o
50 % (4 hours per day).

I added the "work" column in my Gantt view and entered 10 hours of wor
(NOT duration) for the only task in the project and then assigned bot
resources.

When selecting the "resource usage" view I can see that both resource
are allocated equally (each one working 5 hours on the task). So th
Task will be completed in 2 business days.

But as one of the resources can work 100 % (= 8 hours a day) the tas
could be finished earlier (in one business day) by assigning 6 hours t
the first resource and 4 hours to the second resource.

Is there a way to do this automatically (i.e. let ms project optimiz
the resource allocation so that tasks are finished as soon as possibl
even though the workload is not evenly distributed between all assigne
resources)?

I know that I can resolve the issue by manually entering the workin
hours in the resource usage view but some "intelligent" automatism woul
be nice.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Kind regards,

Marcell

Project will allocate the effort base on their assignment units %. Since
this was not specified, it assumes 100%.

Try Window/Split. In the bottom pane, you can key the resource and work
hours for each resource manually.

It's a common misconception that "50%" assignment means the resource works 4
hours a day, "100%" means he works 8 hours a day, and so forth. On a gross
level this can be thought true but that's not what it really means. Someone
who works on a tasl for 1 day at 50% does not work 4 hours, finishing the
task, and then moving on to something else. The task in question does NOT
start at 8am and end at 12 noon. It still lasts all 8 hours - it starts at
8am and finishes at 5 pm. But the amount of energy it takes to do the work
is only 4 hours of full-time equivalent effort - if the resource had not had
something distracting him, he COULD have started at 8 and finished at noon.
A task that requires 4 hours of work will take a 50% resource 8 hours to
complete. It may seem nit-picky but forgetting that can have profound
effects on your schedule.
