Outline numbering spacing adjustment?

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel I have a document that uses Heading 1, Heading 2, and Heading 3 styles to create document structure. I've used the Outline Numbered section of the Bullets and Numbering dialog to apply numbers as follows:

1 Header 1
  1.1 Header 2
    1.1.1 Header 3
    1.1.2 Header 3
  1.2 Header 2
2 Header 1

The problem is, spacing between the numbers and the previously created headlines looks more like this:

1 Header 1
  1.1Header 2
    1.1.1 Header 3
    1.1.2 Header 3
  1.2Header 2
2 Header 1

As you can see, there is no space between the number and the text on Header 2, and what looks like at least two tabs of space between the number and Header 3. Ideally, I'd like one standard space between the number and the header text.

At first, Header 1 had the same problem as Header 2, but Header 1 started displaying properly when I highlighted the numbers and applied Header 1 style to them - even though that was already applied. This didn't help with Header 2 and Header 3.

Where do I adjust this setting?

Go back in through Format>Style>Modify>Format>Numbering>Customise...

You need to set the tab position for each level of the outline numbering
scheme that you have attached to the Heading series of numbering.

The Outline Numbering is a List Template. It has nine levels. There should
be a Heading paragraph style attached to each level.

When you Customise the Outline List Template, you actually set the tab
positions in the underlying paragraph styles.

Microsoft is determined not to tell users how to use these controls. Shauna
Kelly has a very good tutorial here, which applies almost exactly to Word
2008:

Hope this helps
