Outlook 2001 and Connecting to an Exhange Server

Tim Anderson

OK I am a newbie so go easy on me. I have supported PC's for 10 years
and now I have to support 3 Mac's. The Mac's are new to me.

We just install a new server running Windows 2000 and Small Business
Server 2000.

The Mac's all had static IP address but I changed them to get them
from the DHCP server (which is our new server). The Mac clients now
get their IP address from the DHCP server and can surf the web just
fine.

I also created a share on the new server for both mac and pc's. The
Mac clients can see this share and can save files in it.

I thought I was doing pretty good for not knowing much about MAC's.

The Mac's I support are running OX 9.x and I downloaded Outlook 2001.

The problem I am having is I can't get outlook to see the Exchange
Server. When I setup Outlook and try to test the connection I get an
error saying name of the specified Exchange Server could not be found
on your network.

I don't understand this. If the Mac's are getting an IP address for
the same server running Exchange they must be "seeing" it. If the
Mac's can save files on the same server running Exchange aren't they
again "seeing" it.

What am I doing wrong? Any ideas??

Thanks

I had similar issues and have had to check the TCP/IP settings.

We had to add the domain name (domain.com) to the lookup list. I don't know
the exact option since I don't have access the our Macs right now. I'm in
the same shape. Lots of PCs that work great and a few Macs that have to be
supported.

Everything seemed fine with the Macs otherwise, but it wasn't seeing the
Exchange server until I made this change.

Try using the server's IP address instead of the DNS name. This
should solve your connectivity issue.

FYI: I wasn't able to get Outlook to work using TCP/IP. I had to use
AppleTalk instead. When creating a profile click the advanced button,
and select AppleTalk. If your Systems Administrator configured
Service for Macintosh you should have AppleTalk enabled.

Good luck !

Tim,

I think the following article has your answer.

Hope this helps.

Hi Tim!

My comments are inline with yours.
The Mac's all had static IP address but I changed them to get them
from the DHCP server (which is our new server). The Mac clients now
get their IP address from the DHCP server and can surf the web just
fine.
Great!

I also created a share on the new server for both mac and pc's. The
Mac clients can see this share and can save files in it.

Definitely. (By the way it's "Mac" for Macintosh and "MAC" for Media Access
Control address.)
The Mac's I support are running OX 9.x and I downloaded Outlook 2001.

You've got the latest and greatest for OS 9. Entourage just released an
update for Exchange support for Mac OS X machines.
The problem I am having is I can't get outlook to see the Exchange
Server. When I setup Outlook and try to test the connection I get an
error saying name of the specified Exchange Server could not be found
on your network.

This sounds like you don't have interal DNS configured properly either with
the name of your server or your don't have DHCP configured to provide DNS
information to your clients.

Do you have anything hard-coded in the TCP/IP Control Panel on your Macs
such as name servers? If so, remove these and make sure that your DNS server
handles all internal network name resolution and forwards all Internet name
resolution to an outside DNS server.
I don't understand this. If the Mac's are getting an IP address for
the same server running Exchange they must be "seeing" it. If the
Mac's can save files on the same server running Exchange aren't they
again "seeing" it.

Here's a gotcha.

Yes, they are seeing your server, but not by TCP/IP. Instead, they browse
the network using Appletalk and when connecting, they will swtich to TCP/IP.
What am I doing wrong? Any ideas??

You sound like you're doing great so far. Outlook setup on Macs is tricky,
especially if you don't have DNS, but since you do, I still believe this is
where your problem lies.

Hope this helps! bill
