Outlook 2001 on OS X v. 10.3

Has a universal fix been discovered for the "folders" error people get
when launching Microsoft Outlook 2001 in classic mode from Panther OS
10.3?

I am able to run O2001 from my Quicksilver in classic mode from 10.3.5
just fine with our Exchange 2003 server (9.2.2 is on a seperate drive
from OS X) and I am able to run it on my G3 Lombard Powerbook with the
same OS configuration. Both systems were new installs from Generic
Panther CD's.

But, now, we got in some new "mirror" G4 PowerMacs, and with a fresh
install from the OS 10.3.2 CD, and a fresh 9.2.2 install so we can run
Outlook 2001, we are getting the "folders could not be accessed"
error.

The best "fix" for this is to use the disk image trick for the O2001
folder.

And, we can't move to Entourage because ASFAIK, Entourage does not
fully support certain Calendar functions, which are vital within our
workplace.

I haven't seen any solution to this yet.

Tom,

The simplest workaround seems to be to create a disk image containing
the
Microsoft Outlook 2001 application only in it.

Here's what I gathered:
November 11, 2003
J. C. Thorpe
1. Go for a preference hunt and eliminate all Outlook prefs, both in
System 9 folder and the various Library/Preferences directories.
2. Move your "Personal Folders" and "Personal Address Books" files to
your Documents folder.
3. Nuke your Outlook Folder and its contents.
4. Use Disk Utility to create a Read-Write disk image named "Outlook
Volume."
5. Drag the Outlook folder from its installation CD to the "Outlook
Volume"
6. Run Outlook to recreate your profile. Add your Personal Folders
using the Add Services pane of the Profile Properties window (Or
whatever it's called.)
7. Goto System Preferences Accounts pane. On your account add the
"Outlook Volume" to your startup items.
8. You can also create an alias on your dock to the app.

To be more specific, after testing Entourage 2004
I have found the following "downgrades" compared to Outlook 2001
(exchange mail clients)

a. Unable to browse Address Book from Global Address List.

b. If you view the Progress Window, Entourage is constantly looking to
download
and synchronize the emails locally, O2001 instead leaves the mail on
the server
and does not constantly need to "poll" the server.

c. Public folder Calendars are not visible, only public email
accounts.

d. After setting up as an Exchange client, I still have a "Folders on
my computer"
tree which houses a duplicate inbox, drafts, outbox, etc. which I
cannot remove.

Maybe these are a configuration issue that I'm missing, but it is
disappointing that Entourage lacks these features that seem valuable
to exchange users.

Why doesn't Microsoft just make a Mac client for exchange that has the
same
functionality that the Windows users get with Outlook?

Why doesn't Microsoft just make a Mac client for exchange that has the
same
functionality that the Windows users get with Outlook?

I've pieced the following together and to the best of my knowledge this
is what has happened.

If you've ever been in a large corporate environment you've probably run
into situations where each group within the company has to justify its
existence. And as profit margins grow smaller this means budgets get cut
to help increase its bottom line.

Funding and development for Outlook 2001 and Outlook 98 for Mac OS 9 and
earlier was provided by the Exchange Server team within Microsoft. This
app was basically outsourced for development.

The Exchange Server team chose to discontinue support of the Mac client
altogether and the Mac Business Unit, seeing the need for an Exchange
client, picked up the ball. It couldn't get legal access to the code of
Outlook 2001 and it also didn't make sense for it to try to support two
clients (Entourage and Outlook). (The MacBU is a very small part of
Microsoft and therefore its budget is sized accordingly.)

There's simply not enough demand to create a feature for feature client
for the Mac that's as robust as Outlook for Windows. As Entourage
matures it should grow in features for working with Exchange. But the
MacBU must also make it appealing to the home user who will have no need
for the Exchange features. Compromises will be made.

Well, that explains why. It just is more painful when something is
taken
away.

In an effort to outline what is different, I gleaned this from the MS
PDF:

Possible drawbacks to the Entourage 2004 solution might include the
following:

Entourage 2004 provides a solution for e-mail, group calendaring,
scheduling, Global Address Book, and delegation only. Certain
advanced Exchange features, such as voting, shared tasks, shared
notes, and server-side rules, are not accessible.

Entourage 2004 does not provide full public folder or delegation
support.

Although rules stored on Exchange Server will run, Exchange
Server-based rules cannot be created or changed by using Entourage.
To change a server-based rule from the Macintosh computer, users must
use Microsoft Outlook.

Entourage does not detect whether an invitation is out of date or
conflicts with other events.

Entourage does not support invitation counterproposals in Outlook.

Entourage does not perform out-of-office responses in the same way
that Outlook does. To configure an out-of-office response in
Entourage, a user must create a rule.

Entourage 2004 has the following limitations for public folders:
--Only e-mail messages appear in Entourage. Other item types that
might be in the public folder — such as Calendar events, contacts, or
tasks — do not appear in Entourage.
--To have Entourage automatically download the messages in a specific
public folder, a user must subscribe to that folder.
--Public folders cannot be created, dragged, moved, renamed, or
deleted by using Microsoft Entourage.
--Downloading the public folder list from the Exchange server can be
very slow if there are many folders.
--Entourage does not save the list of public folders. The list is
downloaded every time the user selects the top-level public folders
container. To avoid downloading the folder list frequently, users can
subscribe to their favorite public folders in Entourage. Subscribed
folders in Entourage are not added to the Outlook public folders
Favorites list, nor are folders in the Outlook public folders
Favorites list added to subscribed folders in Entourage.
--Users cannot post directly to a public folder. To post a message,
the public folder must have an e-mail address, and the user must have
the correct access privileges. Users can also drag existing messages
to a public folder, depending on a user's privileges.

Users cannot browse Global Address List
To search for an e-mail address by using the Directory Services tool

1. On the Tools menu, click Directory Services.
2. In the Server List, click the directory service you want to
search.
3. In the Search for name box, type the name of the person whose
e-mail address you want to find.
4. Click Find.
5. In the list of search results, double-click an entry to view more
information.

And a recap:
Differences between Entourage 2004 and Outlook for Mac
The following list of the notable differences between Entourage 2004
and Outlook will help you plan Entourage 2004 deployment and diagnose
Entourage issues:
• Entourage uses the WebDAV protocol to communicate with the Exchange
server and manage mail, Calendar, and contacts. Outlook uses a
MAPI-based architecture to communicate with the Exchange server.
• Entourage provides no offline access to the Global Address List.
Offline, recently used addresses obtained from the Global Address
List will appear in the most recently used list provided in the To
field of an Entourage message.
• Users cannot browse the Global Address List in Entourage (that is,
scroll the Global Address List from A to Z).
• Entourage does not support multiple Calendar or Contacts folders.
This applies to Delegation and public folders as well as to the main
account.
• Entourage does not support setting permissions.
• Entourage does not support disabling the Entourage user interface
based on permissions.
• Entourage does not support mapping from subscribed public folders
in Entourage to public folder favorites in Outlook.
• Entourage does not support Outlook forms, voting buttons, RTF
message formatting, or receipt tracking.
• Entourage does not support server-side rules (including
out-of-office messages). Entourage users connecting to an Exchange
2003 server can use Outlook Web Access for out-of-office messages.
• Entourage does not support password expiration notification or the
ability to change the user account password.
• Entourage does not support quota management.
• Entourage does not support synchronizing Tasks or Notes to Exchange
servers.

Does anybody have a Mac System 10 solution if Entourage does not have the
features that Outlook 2001 for Mac had? Is there any other Mac system 10
email system with shared calendar and global contacts that has the features
that Outlook 2001 had???

Bill,

I was on Microsofts web site and saw the discussion on the Outlook
issue. I have a similar issue, but with some differences.

I have a powerbook G4 667Mhz Laptop with a fresh install of all
programs, OS X 10.3 and Microsoft Office 2004, using Outlook 2001 for
e-mail and Calendar. If I am in OS X 10.3 and bring up Outlook 2001
in classic 9.2.2 I will get the "communicating with server" issue and
the "can't open selected folders" issue alot. This happens more so
when I am connected via a ethernet connection vice connecting with the
airport using our company's VPN access.

However if I start the Laptop up in OS 9.2.2 and use Outlook 2001 I
don't really have the either issue, it may happen once or twice in a
8-12 hr day.

Now here is the really strange thing I also have a desktop G4 running
the same software (fresh install and I don't have this problem at all.

Do you think that the files you are sending everyone will work for
this issue, or is there something else that I can do to correct the
problem.

Hi Mike!

Doubtful, but you're welcome to try by downloading them from here
<http://tinyurl.com/3jpb2>.

My files are not meant as a fix for any broken Outlook installs like
you're describing. They're meant to enable users to use Outlook 2001 in
Classic mode when they are unable to boot into Mac OS 9 itself.

Good luck! bill

Bill,

Thanks for your help. It's good to know I'm not the only person
out there with a "what the ...??" cloud hanging over his head in
regard to the limitations of Entourage 2004 vs. Outlook 2001
