Outlook 2001 Quits After Being Idle

Tony Yung

When the user lets her Outlook 2001 idle for a minute, it just quits (no
error message). The other Classic programs are still runnig. The computer
is an iMac G4 800Mhz with OSX.2. The HDD was from a Clone image and no
other users have this problem.

I've tried her acct on a G3 running OSX.2, OS9.2 and Outlook 2001. Same
problem. It quits. I tried my profile and it has no problem.

I noticed when I go into her Calendar, it quits right away.
Running Exchange 5.5.

Any help would be great.

I have dealt with this exact issue at my work for ten fellow users. Outlook
2001 quits instantly while used in Classic by clicking on the Calendar or by
leaving it idle for a few minutes. (I think it's trying to update
information from the Free/Busy servers while it's idle.) We have Exchange
5.5 servers.

Once it happens to a person's account, the issue occurs on other machines
running Mac OS X and Outlook 2001 in classic, so it's not because of the
workstation's configuration. It appears to be an issue with the client's
account on the exchange server. Some flag is messed up on the server -
could be the schedule+ or free/busy preference. I don't know enough to say
for sure. I've gotten no help from our Exchange admins about this issue.

I have several solutions. Sometimes only a few steps are necessary,
sometimes it requires all of the steps.

Ask the user to go to a PC and use Outlook to create a new event in their
calendar. Test the person's account on their machine again. If that
doesn't fix it, then use the command switches such as \cleanschedplus - more
info at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;296192 The
commands will work in Outlook 2002 - through - Outlook 98.

Sometimes I have to go so far as to setup a Mac with OS 9 and use Outlook 98
and Outlook 2001 consecutively.

First I use Outlook 98 with the person's profile and click on the calendar
button. If they haven't had a profile on the machine, you should be
prompted on how you want to configure the calendar. Be sure to select the
third option of "don't use local file." Test the person's Outlook on their
own machine again.
If it still fails, then use Outlook 2001 on the Mac OS 9 computer with the
person's profile and create an new event in their calendar.

I've found out that you can test out the person's account in between each of
the steps I've mentioned above on a Mac with OS X and Outlook 2001. At some
point, it should start working again.

Sorry if this is hard to follow. I have my steps written out and better
organized somewhere that I can post here later.

I think this is due to the power saving feature in classic. you should put
the classic environment to never go in sleep mode and it should solve your
problems.
