Outlook 2001 vs. Exchange Server 2000

I work for one of the largest companies in the U.S. They only support
Wintel boxes for accessing email, though they have tolerated Mac users
connecting to the servers as long as they support themselves. Last
weekend, we upgraded from Exchange Server 1998 to Exchange Server
2000. I am now having difficulties getting my Mac to connect to the
servers.

I have been using Outlook 2001 since it came out. I'm running MacOS
10.3.5 on a Powerbook 17". In the past, I've had problems with
Exchange when initially setting up my profile or connecting after a
clean OS install (could not open information store, could not open
personal folders, etc.). However, I've always been able to get things
up and running within 20 minutes.

This time, I made no changes to my computer after the Exchange Server
upgrade. I'm getting the following dialog box *after* I successfully
set up my profile and tried to connect:

"This is the first time you have logged on to this profile using this
version of Microsoft Outlook. You must connect to the server once
before you can work offline again.

Restart Outlook and then click Connect to log on to the server. Once
you have successfully logged on to the server, your Offline Folders
file will be converted to a new format. If you need to continue using
this file with an older version of Outlook, you should make a copy of
your Offline Folders file before continuing."

If I try to restart and connect again, I get the same dialog box.
I've never seen this dialog box before. A Google on the above text
turned up zero hits.

I can receive my mail via Apple's Mail application, although now I
don't know which server to use for sending (SMTP).

Can anyone help me get up and running again?

As you're setting up the profile, you may be selecting the "No" radio
button for "Is this computer always connected to the network?" option.
This would indicate that you're using a laptop and that you need to
download the message cache to your computer for offline use.

Try selecting "Yes" at first and then set your Outlook to work offline
later.

Hope this helps! bill

William:

You nailed the fact that I'm setting up my profile with the "No" radio
button. Unfortunately, setting up another profile with the "Yes"
radio button results in the same error message.

It doesn't appear that anyone else in the world has seen this message
(I can't get a single hit on Google). Exchange Server 2000 and
Outlook 2001 should work together, right? If you can't help me, what
are my options?

Thanks for your help thus far. I can't think of what else I can do to
get this to work.
