Outlook 2003, how to recognize replied email

I've been a long time user of Outlook Express, am now
using Outlook 2003.

After replying to an email from the inbox in Outlook
2003, why doesn't the icon change showing me that I've
replied to the email after doing so? Am I missing
something, how do you tell if a reply has been made.
