Outlook 2003 scheduled mail retrieval

Does outlook have to be running (taskbar or tray) in order for it to
check for mail on a timed send/receive? I've been trying to set outlook
or outlook express to check for mail, like every 30 minutes or hour but
outlook is the only one that will do it if I have it running. I thought
the "offline option" was so one didn't need to have it running all the
time.

Ourlook needs to be open to function. Work offline just means that you are
not connected to your mail server (usually Exchange).

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

After furious head scratching, Festus asked:
