Outlook adds a period to URL

I have Outlook 2000 SR-1 and IE 6.0. When I send links in
an email message, formatted using Microsoft Outlook Rich
Text or Plain Text, the links are appended with a "."
period when they are clicked on. This addition causes the
page to not be found. However, if I send a link in an
email message formatted in HTML the link is NOT appended
with a "." period and it works fine.

Why is this?

I think that Microsft documented this issue. Does anyone
happen to know that case number?
