Outlook Contacts list - Sorting

D

Don Schmidt

In my Contacts list I have +/- 10 Categories which sort fine but the list
within the categories doesn't sort well. I have names that start in A, B,
Cs below names in the X, Y, Zs.
What do I need to do to get the sorting alphabetized?

Many thanks,

im using outlook 2007 & it works fine. click on the name of the column "full
name" or "file as", that will sort the list in that column. also remember
that outlook will sort based on last name, not 1st name

That sorts the entire Contact file; I wish to sort first by Category and
then by name within the Category.

Category sort is meaningless and impossible, since any contact may be listed
under multiple categories.

I suspect what you want to do is group by Category, then sort within each.
Easily done in the By Category view.

There lies the problem; it sorts by category but within the category it
isn't in alphabetical order.

No it doesn't. The By Category view groups by Category. You can then sort by
any field you want within the category.

This is what I do:

Current View, Phone List, click on the Category filed, and the 14 categories
are neatly grouped.

Then I click on the "File as" or the "Full name" column and then entire 467
names are in alphabetical order.

I can't find a way to get a specific category in alphabetical order.

UPDATE!!

Found what I needed. I needed to go to View, Customize, Sort by "File by".

I'm a long way from liking Outlook but it took me a long way to like liver
and onions. Anything can be overcome if one is stubborn enough. <G>

Thanks Russ for responding; 'hope I can return the favor.

Simply clicking the column header is an easier way to sort by the field you
want.
