Outlook emptied and won't work

I think I had a virus or something. My outlook emptied
itself completely.
I went to MS security and downloaded 9 hours of security
upgrades, including, I assume some sort of firewall.
Now when I try to send receive I only get error messages
and nothing happens - could this be the firewall?
Please help - my business depends on email!!!
