outlook not opening excel attachments

When I have excel open and I get an email with an excel
spreadsheet attached to it, I double click on the
attachment and it will not launch. It looks like it is
going to but it dosn't. If I then close Excel, and then
double click on the attachment, the file will launch. I
am using Office XP. Is there a bug or am I doing
something wrong?

In Excel, check Tools | Options | General. Is the option to ignore other
applications checked? If so, uncheck it and restart Excel.
