Outlook, VPN, and Online Folders

I connect to my outlook exchange over a VPN connection. If the
connection is lost while I'm using Outlook:
1) Outlook hangs until I re-establish the VPN connection
2) Once the VPN connection is re-stablished, Outlook unhangs but I
still can't read my mail ("Network problems are preventing connection
to the MS Exchange server computer")
3) Outlook often does not shutdown properly.

Any advice on how to avoid all three?

Make sure Outlook is set up to work offline by default - then you can do
scheduled or manual syncs to the server. This is the best setting for remote
users.
