"Paste as Link" Errors

M

Mike

I am using Project to summarize four different project files. I have inserted
each project file and want to use Project to summarize specific tasks from
the four inserted project files. I use the copy and paste as a link option
for each task that I want to bubble up, but not all of the data is accurate.
Some tasks that are bubbled up link fine and as the duration, start and end
dates change in one of the original four project files change the bubbled up
link changes as well. But for others the start and end dates are incorrect
and appear to be incorrectly linking to the wrong task in the original four
project files. Does anyone know a way to resolve this?

Thanks,

Mike

Hi,

Be aware that the more links you have, the more opportunity there is for
file corruption if you even think of over-writing files, moving them or
renaming them.

A much more robust system is a simple macro that creates a new Master
schedule, but with the Link option OFF in the Insert Project dialog. This
copies all tasks and consolidates resource data automatically.

Now for your bubble tasks. Insert a flag field such as Flag1 and set to Yes
against any Tasks you want reported on. Repeat for every file. In the Master
file create a Filter to only show tasks with the flag field set to Yes. Copy
that filter to the Global.Mpt file using the Organizer and you can reliably
report on your tasks and no chance of file corruption.
