"paste special" only offers option to paste as "slide"

The "paste special" option only has one option - to paste as "slide". There
should be a whole list of options in the "paste special" window.

Next question then: Is the focus on the preview/slide miniature pane or on
the main slide view? If you click on the slide itself, then do the paste
special you should see other options.
