PDF hyperlinks

Not sure if this is the right group for this question, but here
goes...

Word - PDF - Hyperlinks. I've got a specific problem and not sure if
Acrobat/Word can do it. We have the full version of Acrobat 7.
Hyperlinks *do* work in Word, not just ordinary ones to web pages and
external documents, but also "hidden" ones, where the text on the page
"hides" the ugly hyperlink URL text. So you can put "See our
management policy", where "management policy" is a hyperlink and the
full URL is "behind" it. This works in Word.

However, upon PDF-ing, hyperlinks that are in the document in full
(like http://www.government...etc) or (e-mail address removed) will
work and be converted.

But the "hidden" hyperlinks described above won't work.

Does anyone know of a way to make these work? Is this actually a Word
thing or more of an Acrobat/PDF problem?

Are you using the Acrobat add-in for Word to create the PDF or merely
printing to the PDF driver?

I have asked the person concerned and she says she did try with the
Adobe PDF Word add-in button menu thing that appears - but she got an
error and no PDF was produced. She thinks there is a problem between
Word 2003 and the Acrobat that was installed, which is why she always
uses the "print to the driver" approach.

We have other people in the organisation with "full strength" Adobe
Acrobat, so if push comes to shove we will try to produce the PDF on
one of their PCs, if these hyperlinks will come out properly if the
PDF is produced through the Distiller.

Thank you for the advice.

Acrobat can certainly have functioning hyperlinks as you describe, so the
problem must be somewhere in the way you create the PDF. Whether Word or
Acrobat may be guilty, it's hard to say, but my money would be on Acrobat.

It may be unconnected, but there were some hyperlink problems in early
versions of Acrobat 7 (hyperlinking to it rather than from it), so do you
have all the updates? If memory serves, I think you needed 7.5 (or 7.0.5?)
to fix it.

Well, if we cannot get it to work I will get our I.T. Department to
check for and apply the necessary updates to the package.

Thanks for the advice.

You will have to use the add-in to get the results you require, but early
versions of Acrobat 7's add-ins, were problematic. Adobe fixed this later,
so ensure that Acrobat has all the available updates applied.
