Permanently delete messages in Outlook 2007

To delete email messages in Outlook 2003, shift-delete would bypass the
Deleted Items folder. In 2007, shift-delete sends the message to the Deleted
Items folder. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

Try again; the behavior is still the same. It doesn't even matter if you are
using the left or right SHIFT button. Holding a SHIFT button while clicking
the delete button on the toolbar works as well.

Thanks so much, Roady. It works if I click the delete button on the toolbar
while holding the SHIFT button, but doesn't work if I click the DELETE button

Weird indeed. What happens when you SHIFT+DELETE a file from Explorer? Just
create a new text document to test it with.

What mail account type are you using?

Long shot but worth trying;
Locate outcmd.dat and extend.dat and rename them to .old when Outlook is
closed.
Start Outlook and try again.
