PERT Chart Problems

R

Ron T

I am using Project 98 SR-1.
I have a project with approximately 300 tasks.
The PERT chart, when it was working, stacked tasks so
that I had to drag at each task to see if there was a
task or tasks beneath it. This week, after approximately
a year of use the PERT chart begain displaying only a few
of the tasks with leader and trailer arrows going to
empty space. When I tried to print the PERT chart the
program shut down.

Perhaps related to the issue, I have noted that in the
Gantt view the line numbers repeat and or have breaks in
them. (all my filters are off - view all task selected.
For example there are two line 1's.

I have shut down the system and rebooted with no effect.

Hi Ron,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

Sound like a spot of corruption is setting in. I hope you have a backup :)
If you suspect a corrupt file, you could try the suggestions in FAQ Item:
43. File Bloat? - Might be Corruption.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: http://www.mvps.org/project/.

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Thanks to Mike for the lead. I did as you suggested and
that process cleaned up the line numbering errors (I now
only have one "1" and the numbers are continuous to 617
so I have approxamitely 600 tasks rather than the 300 I
originally reported. The file size had grown as
predicted.

However, the PERT chart view is still not as it should
be. Of the 600 task only about 12 are being displayed. I
did have backup files and going back about two months I
find the PERT chart is displayed fully, though the tasks
are stacked, one upon another or in groups.

A lot of water has gone by the bridge since two months
ago in terms of falling back and rebuilding so I would
like to aviod that, and even if I did, I would not know
what caused the problem so I can avoid it in the futrue.

Do you have some more good suggestions to get me out of
this pitfall.

Have you tried Format/Layout Now?

It would seem that you can best avoid corruption and bloat by using
File/Save As... rather than a simple Save, as that process is supposed to
tidy up the bits left over from editing etc.

And keep saving backups :)
