I am going to try to explain what i am doing and
hopefully you will understand. i wanting to place a
picture in a document on the front page (think cover
page). i am going to make many copies of this document
but with a different picture each time. But i want all
them to look the same (like a template). is there a way i
can lock the location and the size of my picture and just
kept inserting different pictures into that spot for each
new document.

Hi Justin

Yes, you can do what you want. There are probably several ways to do it, but
here's one.

Create a new template. How to do that is explained at
Creating a Template - The Basics (Part I)
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Customization/CreateATemplatePart1.htm

In your template, insert a table with 1 row and 1 column. Position the table
vertically where you want it. Make it the right *width* for your pictures
(frankly, the height doesn't matter much). Make sure the width won't change,
by doing Table > Properties. On the Table tab, click Options, and un-tick
the box "Automatically re-size to fit contents".

Make sure that you can see gridlines in the table (on the Table menu,
there's a button for Show Gridlines or Hide Gridlines). Then, click in the
table and use Format > Borders and Shading to remove the borders. You now
have no printable borders, but you can still see your table with the
gridlines. Gridlines don't print.

Save your template.

To create a new document, File > New and select your template. Click in the
table and insert your picture.

The advantage of using a table is that it will automatically shrink the
picture to fit, thus making all your documents look similar. If your picture
isn't wide enough to fill up the table, drag its corner to meet the
gridlines.

Hope this helps.
