Plug-in MSWord

Hi,
I am a final year engineering Student. I have been allotted to create
a Plug-in for MS word. I have been told that I need to open some
proprietary file to be opened in MS Word.
I am very much new to this area, can any one suggest me how to proceed
on this.

The easiest way to create Word add-ins is as global templates (*.dot files
placed in the Word Startup folder). A COM add-in is the other alternative.

That is beyond my expertise and actually off-topic for this NG (or any other
Word NG) because COM add-ins are written (if I understand it correctly) in
programming languages other than VBA. A Google search, however, did turn up
