I'm getting the same problem with Outlook XP (2002).
I've turned off all security, and I can telnet to the
pop3 server just fine. I can even do the (Test) button
in the account setup, and it says everything is fine.
But when I try to Send/Receive, it randomly (about 60-80%
of the time) times out. On the server side, the server
log shows it receiving the request and sending the reply,
and then when my client "times out", the server just
shows it dropping the connection. It's almost like
Outlook isn't paying close enough attention, and drops
its received packet half the time. I'm not sure what is
causing it to be intermittant, though, since some of the
time it *does* work.

Can anyone help?

There is a problem in one of the Windows components that Outlook uses that
causes it to drop a response from the server if the response arrives too
quickly. We've added a work-around to Outlook 2003 and to SP-3 of Outlook
2002 (due out early next year).
