Portfolio Server 2007 and Project Server 2007 Resource Pool Synchronization

B

Blake

I am posting this message as advice to help others who may have a
similar situation that I had with Resource Pool Syncrhonization
between Project Portfolio Server 2007 and Project Server 2007.
Following the instructions from TechNet, I had got to the point where
I could import projects from Project Server to Portfolio Server,
however Resource Pool Synchronization failed with the message "Could
not synchronize resource pools from server 'ProjServ'. No custom field
assigned to competencies."

The problem was that a Resource Breakdown Structure (RBS) mapping was
missing between the two. Follow these steps to create one:

Project Server Configuration
1. Open Project Web Access as an Administrator
2. Click Server Settings in the left menu.
3. Under Enterprise Data, click Enterprise Custom Field Definition.
4. Click New Lookup Table.
a. Name the table Resource Type Lookup, or as desired.
b. Type is Text.
c. In the Lookup Table section, add values for the different resource
types in your organisation (for example, Project Manager).
d. Click Save
5. Click New Field
a. Name the field Resource Type Custom, or as desired.
b. Entity is Resource, and Type is Text
c. Set Custom Attributes to Lookup Table, and select the Resource Type
Lookup.
d. Click Save.
6. Open the Resource Center, by clicking the link the left menu.
7. Edit the Details for each Resource, and select the relevant
Resource Type under Resource Custom Fields.

Project Portfolio Server Configuration
1. Open Project Portfolio Server as an Administrator.
2. Click Settings in the top menu.
3. Under Structure & Attribute Manager, click Resource Management.
4. Click Resource Type Management.
5. Click the Add Resource Type tab.
a. For Resource Type Name, enter the name for one of your resource
types, as defined in Project Server (for example, Project Manager).
b. Add a Yearly Permanent Cost and a Yearly Contractor Cost.
c. Click Add
d. Repeat this process for all Resource Types as defined in Project
Server.
6. Return to the Settings page.
7. Click Project Server Gateway.
8. Click Project Server Management.
9. Edit the existing Project Server Definition.
10. In the Resource Type Custom Field, enter Resource Type Custom.
11. Click Update.
12. Return to the Settings \ Project Server Gateway page.
13. Click Synchronize Resource Pools.
14. Check the box for your Project Server.
15. Click Update.
16. A message will display indicating success.
