Is there any way to use dialogue boxes in PowerPoint instead of the task
Pane? for example animation settings.

What Luc said, except...

Almost not. You can disable the new features, and then you get the old
animation interface. Go to Tools > Options > Edit, and check the boxes
under Disable New Features. This will get you the old interface, but it
also means that you don't get any of the new animation features.
