PowerPoint Mac 2004, audio file problem

J

josephmac

I have set up a presentation to run continually, the first time
through the
presentation the audio playes fine through a series of slides as it
should,
the second time through the presentation it stops playing after the
first
slide.

Does anybody know a fix or workaround for this problem?

How have you inserted the audio into your powerpoint presentation?

Did you insert > sounds > from file?

or is the audio added as part of a 'slide' transition?

When I receive a PPS file that is supposed to include audio, none is heard. Ongoing issue for months.

Hi,

Most likely the creator of the file did it wrong. There¹s an FAW about it.

Sounds/Movies don't play, images disappear or links break when I move or
email a presentation

Incoming emails with PowerPoint - often PowerPoint will not respond and I have to force quit, in essence, I cannot view the presentation at all. Other times, the presentation will play but the music will not. I have a Mac OSX 10.4.11 and PowerPoint 2004 for Mac, version 11.3.2.

Any ideas out there?

Same issue for me. I have never heard the audio from a .pps file, no doubt created in Powerpoint for Windows. The images display perfectly, but silently. I have tried Powerpoint for Mac (2004),
Keynote 2008, and Open Office, all with the same results, great photos no sound. I can even find the sound file, always a slide transition on the first slide and always a .wav file. I've tried opening the file in Windows, then resaving as a .ppt, then opening in one of the Mac programs. Same results, .ppt file works fine in Windows, but in any of the Mac programs, great photos, no sound.

Hi Mark,

This article explains the situation and what can be done to correct the
situation:

I'm kind of having the same problem. What's happening is that I'm putting a music file onto one slide, but the music won't play for the rest of the presentation. It's only playing on that one slide.

Hi,

That¹s another common, but very different problem. It, too, has its own web
page:

Are the instrux there more or less workable for 2008, Jim?

Hi Steve,

Yes, the Mac versions of PowerPoint are pretty much the same as the PC
versions.

WAV files are handled the same way with the 100 kb file size default setting
in preferences (PowerPoint > Preferences > General > Link sounds with file
size greater than ... Kb

All other sounds are handled by QuickTime. The current version of QuickTime
supports these formats followed by their respective file extensions:
AIFF audio: aiff, aif, aifc, cdda
uLaw/AU audio: au, snd, ulw
MIDI: mid, midi, smf, kar
QUALCOMM Purevoice audio: qcp
Sound Designer II: sd2
GSM audio: gsm
AMR Studio: AMR
AAC audio: aac, adts
CAF audio: caf
AC3 audio: ac3
WAVE audio: wav,bwf

Not all of the above are turned on by default in QuickTime's preferences.
Use the Apple menu and choose System Preferences to turn the settings on and
off. Click the QuickTime icon and go to the Advanced tab. Click MIME
settings and then click the disclosure triangle next to Audio to find the
checkboxes to turn each type on or off.

If you want to use a sound file from an audio CD, PowerPoint 2004 & 2008 on
the Mac will rip it for you. Use Insert > Movies and Sounds > Play CD Audio
track. Then select the tracks and the timings within the tracks that you
want to play.

Setting the custom animation so that the sound plays across slides is pretty
much the same, too. Right click, choose Custom Animation, and adjust the
settings there.

Updated ... thanks, Jim. One question though: IIRC, on the PC, inserting an
Audio Track from CD creates a link rather than ripping the sound file. Is it
actually different in 2004/2008? And if so, does it rip to a file and create a
link to it, or rip to WAV and embed?

(well, Steve, you COULD try it ...)

Yeah, but the office is a mess, the mac's buried under a rubble of books and
papers ... at least I *think* it's under there somewhere ... excuses mumble
mumble excuses ....

Hi Steve,

I tried it. The Insert Sound from CD process creates a link and does not
embed the sound. It will not rip the sound file nor does it create a linked
audio file if you use File > Save As > PowerPoint package and the sound is
also lost if using File > Make Movie.

The only way the sound plays is if the music CD is in the CD drive. So this
option is not the best way to play audio in a presentation.

True. On the other hand, that makes it easier for me. Nothing's changed from the
earlier versions / Windows versions of PPT. No need for a rewrite. Whew.

Today I noticed that Insert > Movies and Sounds > Sound from File lets you
browse your iTunes sounds and playlists. When I select a sound sometimes it
imports and sometimes it doesn't. I can't find what's in common with which
ones can and which ones can't be imported, but when I save as a PowerPoint
package PowerPoint does copy the sounds into the new folder that it makes.

In iTunes, some sounds will have DRM and some won't, I suspect.

Windows PPT respects DRM and won't let you use rights-managed sounds. It's likely
that it's the same on this side of the gulch. ;-)

That very well could be. But in ppt 2004 I was able to import a wav file I
made but the same file would not work in ppt 2008. I'd like to think there
was rhyme and reason, but I think it's probably just a bug.

Argghh. I don't know offhand whether WAV even supports DRM, come to think of
it. I'll ask around. But it does seem to have more legs than that.
