PowerPoint quits when trying to use the slideshow function

Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: intel

So, ... my copy of Office 2004 worked just fine for years, but suddenly whenever I attempt to view the "Slideshow" on PowerPoint, it just quits. I've e-mailed MicroSoft twice and have received case numbers with promises of further help, but the silence is deafening. Any suggestions?

Hi there, I was wondering if you are still seeing this problem? If
so, I have a few questions?

What type of mac do you have?
What version of Tiger are you running? Please make sure you are
running that latest version (10.4.11).
Does this happen with a brand new presentation? Or just on already
created files?
What happens when you use presenter tools?
When you say "it quits", do you mean slide show or does PowerPoint
quit?

I have other questions...but let's start off with this. Thanks!

Hi Nancy,
I am running 10.4.11, and this happens on all presentations, new or old. I can open a PowerPoint file or start a new one, change the slides and use the slide view or the slide sorter view, but if I click the slideshow button, the whole program quits and asks if I want to send a report to Apple. I do get a message each time it opens that I am missing fonts (MS PGothic and 3 others that look like Japanese letters). I haven't changed anything in the computer other than auto-updates from both Microsoft and Apple.

Thanks...you know, what version of Office 2004 are you running? I
believe the latest update for Office is 11.3.8. This sound very
similar to a problem that was fixed in one of the updates...can you
check your version?

Also, to get the update, you can go to http://www.microsoft.com/mac
for the latest update.

The other thing is to check Font Book and see if those Japanese fonts
are disabled. If they are, try enabling them and see if that helps
also.

let me know if that helps! Thanks!

One more thing...if you don't have those Japanese fonts, try re-
installing Office...but do a custom install for just fonts (MS P
Gothic is an Microsoft font that usually gets installed with Office if
you do a standard install). And see if that helps.

Let me know! Thanks again.

Hey!
I know it's been a while, but unfortunately this advice did not work. My disc doesn't have a selection to just install the fonts, and the font book doesn't contain anything that looks as though it turns fonts on and off. The mystery remains why it worked fine for 3-1/2 years and then went bonkers. Anybody else have any additional suggestions?

Frustrated! :frown:

Hi again, I've been waiting for your return. :)

Have you tried deleting the powerpoint prefs and restarting
powerpoint? The prefs are located in the user
folder:Library:preferences:com.microsoft.Powerpoint.plist.

Make sure to quit PowerPoint, delete the plist and then restart...and
see if that works.

Let me know! Thanks!

Nancy

Hi Nancy,

First of all, I REALLY appreciate your attempts to help here. Unfortunately, that didn't do the trick either.

This is really mysterious...I know that there shouldn't be any
problems with PowerPoint 2004 slide show with 10.4.11. So more
questions...until we HOPEFULLY figure it out...

Does presenter tools do the same thing? That is, Slide Show menu ->
View Presenter Tools

Was there any other apps that you recently loaded on your machine
about the time when this began to happen?

Did it happen when you either updated the Office apps, or upgraded the
OS?

Did you try reinstalling PowerPoint? (I know, this may sound like a
cop-out answer...but always something to try... :)

And you are saying that when you run Slide Show, the app quits, right?

Thanks!

It looks like my last post didn't make it here. Presenter tools also caused the application to quit, ... there weren't any new applications loaded on the machine except a new browser - Camino, ... and this certainly may have started after an update occurred. I just don't know after which one. I can try reinstalling PowerPoint and will let you know, but I already have tried reinstalling the entire Office suite and that didn't work.

When you reinstall PowerPoint (or the Office Suite), make sure to
delete all the prefs that deal with Microsoft before you reinstall.

I'm kind of wondering if it had anything to do with the last OS 10.4
update. I had some problems with the 10.4.11 update where after the
update, I couldn't launch quite a few apps. I had to reinstall the
system. But then, I think the update got messed up in the middle of
it. Did you see anything like that? Where you got errors or problems
in the middle of the update (OS or Office)?

Sorry I'm not being much help...trying to do what I can. :)

Wayne, could you email me the Apple report that you get when
PowerPoint crashes?

(e-mail address removed)

thanks!
Nancy
