Preventing software programs from automatically starting

I have some software programs which automatically start up when I turn on my
computer (e.g, ACT!, Weather channel, etc.). How do I stop from them from
automatically starting each time I turn on the computer? Thanks1

either open the programs and check the options to not auto-start or use
msconfig (start->run->msconfig) and on the startup tab, uncheck the programs
you don't want auto-starting.
